Scherer Station

The premise on which the decision was made to build a police station in Scherer Park is false. Another police station can't guarantee increased safety to the residents of District 8. In fact, replacing neighborhood treasures with "lookout posts" is proof that our society is failing.

Unstable economy, deterioration of social values and destruction of parks and landmarks create unpredictability. If people are deprived of their sense of community, there is little motivation to internalize respect and restraint. Without internalized guiding principles, law enforcement is futile—a society declines to a police state.

I hope the council reconsiders and at least waits to hear if this case will be appealed. Councilman Jerry Shultz needs to take Logic 101 he is attributing the need for the police station to the delay of its construction.

Campaign Suits

It seems suspicious that the city is pursuing above-limit contributors to only two candidates for mayor. All three benefited from contributors who gave more than the legal limits. The actions against Norm Ryan and Dan Baker appear to be an abuse of power, no doubt influenced by the current termed-out mayor, Beverly O'Neill. We voted for term limits to "level the playing field," because incumbents always have the advantage. This action is intended to make her opponents look bad, thereby helping win a third term we voted she couldn't have.

Your editorial (May 3) stated that "if voters want ... to set limits ... they deserve to have the limits enforced." Clearly and unequivocally, we voted for term limits. Why aren't they being enforced?
